Midway, North Carolina, was first established in 1882 and is said to have earned its name due to its location being somewhere “in the middle” of two major cities at the time, Charlotte and Raleigh. Before it was populated with the few thousand people that call it home today, the area was inhabited by the Catawba Indian Nation, particularly the Salisbury, who were a subgroup of the Catawba. The ruins of their “Chunnenuk” village remain near the village center and are a popular spot among locals to explore. Since its inception, Midway is most noted for its brick-making industry, which provided the brick for some of the most recognizable structures in North Carolina. From churches and educational institutions to hospitals, many of these buildings still stand today. Discover facts about A Comprehensive Guide to Pfafftown, North Carolina.
