Woodbridge is named for the first postmaster and founder of the community, Levi Woodbridge. He donated land for a railroad depot and a schoolhouse when the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad was built through his property in 1848. The Raleigh and Gaston Railroad Company established a post office at Woodbridge in 1851, with Levi Woodbridge as its first postmaster.  Before incorporation, Woodbridge operated as a village under the Wake County government.
